President Biden’s decision to quietly send more weapons to Israel is meeting angry resistance from some Democrats in Washington, underscoring the party’s divide on the Gaza war. Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen accused the administration of attempting an “end-run” around Congress and urged Biden to use military assistance as “leverage” to force Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s hand on policy. “Until the Netanyahu government allows more assistance into Gaza to help people who are literally starving to death, we should not be sending more bombs,” he said on ABC. Meanwhile, some Democrats are also concerned U.S. intelligence is contributing to civilian deaths in Gaza by way of an expanded information sharing agreement with Israel, The Wall Street Journal reported. And the Pentagon’s plan to build a pier off Gaza to facilitate humanitarian aid shipments is being scrutinized by military experts who say it would endanger U.S. troops, according to the Washington Post. One retired naval officer called the plan “stupid.”
